Thousands of people every week are scouring the internet for a free trial IPTV service and are left with more questions than answers. There are a lot of choices – STBemu, Stalker Portal, Xtream codes – but no-one tells you what they are. This article does.
What is IPTV and why does the protocol matter?
IPTV is the acronym for Internet Protocol Television. Rather than using a satellite or cable TV connection to get your TV signals, you get them over the internet. You receive the streams (either live or on demand) direct from the provider.
The reason you have protocols such as Stalker Portal and Xtream is that different IPTV providers package their streams differently, and different apps are designed to read the different packages. If you get the app paired with the protocol wrong, you won’t be able to use it, even if you have a legitimate subscription.
Knowing the difference before you sign up for a free trial IPTV subscription will save you a lot of time.
STBemu and Stalker Portal Protocol: a Match Made in Heaven
STBemu (Set-Top Box Emulator) is an Android app that emulates a Mag set-top box. The boxes were previously the hardware of choice for IPTV services that use the Stalker Portal middleware system.
When an IPTV provider operates a Stalker Portal server, they look for a device that works in a certain way: using a MAC address for identification, rather than a user name and password. STBemu mimics this functionality on any Android phone, tablet or TV box.
To use STBemu with a Stalker Portal IPTV provider, you need:
- A portal URL (in the form http://domain.com/c/)
- A MAC address (STBemu provides a default MAC address or portal assigns one)
- A subscription (or an IPTV trial code for free access to a portal)
This information is entered in the app’s profile settings and, once saved, STBemu displays the provider’s entire interface, with live channels, a program guide (EPG) and video on demand (VOD) libraries. It’s much the same as if you were using a real Mag box.
Xtream Codes: The Challenger
Even though Stalker Portal remained the protocol for the many providers who have invested in that infrastructure, another protocol emerged and gained popularity: Xtream Codes IPTV.
Xtream has a simple authentication mechanism: a server address, user name and password. This allowed users to more easily share the login and for apps to be built to support it.
The majority of IPTV apps – IPTV Smarters, TiviMate, GSE Smart IPTV – support Xtream Codes out of the box. If a service provider gives you a free trial IPTV link in Xtream format, it will typically be something like:
http://server-address:port/get.php?username=XXXX&password=XXXX&type=m3u_plus
You then paste this into an app and it loads the channels. No MAC address, no emulation required.
Some providers will offer both of these protocols at the same time – a Stalker Portal for STBemu and Xtream for everyone else. If you know which one your favourite app supports, that’s what you should request.
The Best Way to Test a Free Trial IPTV Service
Think of a free trial as a trial period. Use it deliberately. Here’s what you need to look at during the 24-48 hours:
Consistency in streaming. View a live stream in the late afternoon. If it does, it will 100% of the time. A 2 p.m. test is meaningless.
Number of channels versus quality channels. If you have 20,000 channels but 12,000 of them are black screens, it doesn’t matter. Browse sports, news and regional categories, and click links randomly.
EPG accuracy. A 12-hour-lagging (or non-existent) electronic program guide (EPG) makes live TV much less convenient. Check if the EPG is accurate.
Server response time. How long are channel changes? If you have a properly set-up Xtream IPTV or Stalker portal server, you should get a new stream up within two to three seconds (assuming a decent internet connection).
Customer support responsiveness. Send a test message during your trial. If they are slow or don’t reply during the trial, it will be worse after.
A Word to the Wise
IPTV itself is not illegal. It’s the same technology that powers YouTube TV, Hulu Live and all other streaming services. The legality of IPTV relates to the content, and whether they have been licensed to be streamed.
Many free trial IPTV services are either operating in a legal grey area or just outside the law. This is not to say this is bad, but be aware. Unlicensed services can be shut down at any time, meaning you will lose your subscription.
Legal providers exist. They’re more expensive, they offer fewer channels, and they don’t flaunt “free trial IPTV” like that – but they’re also not going away anytime soon.
The Short Version
STBemu uses MAC addresses to connect to Stalker Portal servers. Xtream Codes is a username/password-based system, and is compatible with most contemporary IPTV apps. Free trial IPTV is only free and valuable if you test the right thing – does it work, does it work well, can they help me? Know which protocol your app uses, request the right login information, and you’ll save yourself a lot of time fiddling with settings and get more time to watch.
