Most people waste hours setting up apps which were never going to work for them. They download STBEmu, copy a Stalker Portal URL and watch a buffing screen. Then the codes they are going to try are Xtream codes. Then they give up. The issue here is not the technology, it’s that nobody described how these 3 things are connected and how a free trial IPTV service comes in. In this article, I’m changing that.
What a Free Trial IPTV Service Actually Gives You
A free trial IPTV subscription is a trial period that allows you to sample IPTV channels, server speed and stream stability for a short duration of 24 to 48 hours, before committing to paying for a subscription. Typically, this doesn’t require a credit card from most providers.
In either case, what you get is either a Stalker Portal URL and a MAC address or a set of Xtream codes (a server URL, a username and a password). These are not mutually replaceable. Both are completely different authentication systems, and the app you use is dependent upon the authentication system that your provider issues.
This is the one biggest mistake that is made in getting free trials not to work.
STBEmu: The App Built for Stalker Portal
STBEmu (Set-Top Box Emulator) is an Android software which emulates a real Mag STB. It was developed specifically to be plugged into Stalker Portal middleware, the software at the server side originally written for hardware devices such as Mag 254 or Mag 322 and similar devices.
A provider that hosts a Stalker Portal assigns a MAC address, a 17 character address with the pattern 00:1A:79:XX:XX:XX, to each subscriber of that provider. By imitating the physical device with that MAC address the portal can see and accept the connection.
To set up STBEmu to use a free trial IPTV Stalker Portal, go to IPTV Settings → Profiles → Add Profile and fill in the following:
- The full address you’re provided by your IPTV service (typically followed by a
c/)
- STB MAC: The MAC address of your trial account
After saving STBEmu loads the portal interface, authenticates against the server and streams content in exactly the same way as a hardware box does. The trial period is on server-side basis, after the trial is over, the MAC address is no longer recognized.
One important thing to note: STBEmu is a neutral tool. It is not a content provider. It is plugged in into anywhere you point it. The free trial IPTV service quality is a matter of the provider’s infrastructure and not the app.
With Stalker Portal IPTV, you can find out how the server side works
Stalker Portal is middleware, which is software between a stream source in an IPTV provider’s infrastructure and an end user’s set-top box. It controls subscriptions, device authentication with MAC addresses, categorizes channels and controls video-on-demand libraries.
You get a free IPTV Stalker Portal URL, and you’re simply getting a temporary access to a live server that’s running this middleware. The portal will monitor and keep an eye on your MAC address and once you hit the end of the trial period, they will cut off access.
Xtream-based services generally do not rank as well as providers using Stalker Portal for the organisation of their EPG (Electronic Program Guide) data and VOD categorisation. The interface is not built from the app, but from the portal, which means that although the app is not running, you can still use STBEmu, including channel lists, movie libraries and catch-up.
This is important to know because, if a portal server is slow or overloaded, changing the settings in STBEmu won’t help. A high-quality server is the key to it all.
Watching IPTV is fundamentally different and requires a different app, IPTV Xtream
The code of Xtream is on a different protocol. IPTV Xtream does not use the MAC authenticator but uses username and password associated with a server URL. This combination of the three pieces of information produces an authenticated M3U playlist or direct API access.
The typical Xtream credentials look like this:
- Server:
http://provider-domain.com:PORT - Username:
abc12345 - Password:
xyz98765
For apps that support Xtream natively, such as Tivimate, IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV, there is a special ‘Xtream Codes’ login option. You fill in those three sections and the app fetches all of your channels and VOD list for you.
STBEmu does not have a built-in support for Xtream codes. In case your free trial IPTV service offers you Xtream credentials, STBEmu isn’t the instrument you are in search of. Requires an Xtream compatible player.
Services built on Xtream are often more easily tested in a trial period. The playlist they generate is in M3U format which can be loaded into almost any player which is compatible with IPTV. The downside is there is more variation in EPG data quality and VOD organization between VOD providers.
Choosing the Right Setup for Your Free Trial
Here is the practical summary:
| What your provider gives you | App to use |
|---|---|
| Portal URL + MAC address | STBEmu (Stalker Portal) |
| Server URL + Username + Password | Tivimate, IPTV Smarters, GSE (Xtream) |
Prior to beginning any free trial IP TV assessment, simply contact your supplier and ask them the question: “Is this a Stalker Portal or Xtream? That one question accounts for 90% of configuration issues.
Test during peak hours during the trial, which is usually in the evenings in your area. A service that is streaming smoothly at 2 PM may become very “buffy” at 9 PM, when the server is busiest. It’s that peak hour performance you’re paying for.
The Honest Assessment
STBEmu, Stalker Portal and Xtream are well documented and mature technologies. They are not all necessarily the same, they are just different tools for different infrastructure configurations. There’s such a thing as a free trial IPTV period that can assist you gauge the provider’s servers, not the apps.
It is important to know what protocol you are using and then match it up with the right application, and after 24 hours you will know if a service is worth paying for.
Here is the complete structure. All else is details.
