Most of people spend money on IPTV subscription which they have not tested. They register, pay a lump sum, and find three days later that there are three buffers every 10 minutes or the service doesn’t work with their setup. That’s avoidable. A free trial IPTV period is offered for this reason only — to ensure that quality, compatibility and connection stability can be tested before a single dollar is taken from your account.
For a proper test of IPTV service, just read the following.
What a Free Trial IPTV Actually Gives You
A good free trial IPTV service provides you with all or part of a provider’s channel lineup, which is provided for a period of 24 to 48 hours. There are some providers that offer a 7-day trial for its premium packages.
It’s not only quality of the picture that you’re testing in that window. You’re testing:
- Up-time of the stream — Does it go down during peak hours (evenings, weekends)?
- Server response time — How much time does it take to switch channels?
- Content library — Do you really need the channels, VODs or sports packages?
- Protocol compatibility — Is the service compatible with the method you use to connect to it?
The latter point is significant and technical, and not as many people think.
IPTV STBemu and Stalker Portal: The Same Technology, Two Interfaces
There are two popular methods to link to an IPTV service: IPTV STBemu and Stalker Portal. They’re closely related.
Stalker Portal is a middleware protocol, designed initially for use in set-top boxes. For providers who deploy a Stalker Portal server, it creates an environment like that of a physical STB so that smart devices can be connected as if they were a physical STB decoder. It’s stable, supported and provides a neat, tidy channel interface.
STBemu, which means Set-Top Box Emulator, is an Android app that will be able to access the servers of Stalker Portal directly from a smartphone, tablet, Android TV box or Fire Stick. The app emulates the operation of a real STB decoder and sends and receives the data between the app and the provider’s middleware via MAC address that you generate or get from the app settings.
To connect via STBemu during a free trial:
- Install STBemu from a trusted source (Google Play Store or as recommended by the provider).
- Open the application and go to Settings – Profiles – Add Profile.
- Enter the provider’s Portal URL — usually it is something like
http://domain.com:port/c/where the domain name and port number are the same as in the provider’s website. - Enter or register a MAC address (4. STBemu generates a MAC address automatically under Device ID).
- Save and restart profile.
If the provider’s trial is set up for Stalker Portal, it will login and display channel list in a few seconds. In most instances, Stalker Portal requires no username or password, it is MAC based.
IPTV Xtream: The Other Standard Worth Knowing
IPTV Xtream, also known as Xtream Codes or Xtream API, is another protocol that has emerged as the preferred choice for a majority of current IPTV service providers. IPTV Xtream does not depend on MAC authentication, instead it requires a user name, password and server URL.
This type of flexibility is more their forte. Some Xtream-compatible apps are TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, GSE Smart IPTV and dozens more. The most common M3U playlist format is also compatible with Xtream based providers.
When you get a free trial IPTV login from an Xtream provider, you will probably be provided with:
- A server URL (e.g.,
http://provider.com:8080) - A username
- A password
The three credentials are valid on any Xtream-compatible app. In your trial, it would be great to try out the same credentials on at least two different apps, because this helps to clear up the distinction between service quality and issues with the app.
STBemu vs. Xtream: Which One to Use for Your Trial
It depends on the provider; the protocol used is entirely up to them. There are many services that will have both. Let’s get to the nitty-gritty:
| Feature | STBemu / Stalker Portal | IPTV Xtream |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication | MAC address | Username + Password |
| App support | STBemu, GSE | TiviMate, Smarters, GSE |
| EPG (TV Guide) | Built-in via middleware | Varies by app |
| Setup complexity | Moderate | Simple |
| Portability | Tied to MAC | Any device, any app |
Generally, Xtream is quicker to set up and is easier to troubleshoot a free trial IPTV test. If either you already use STBemu or you notice that the provider’s Stalker Portal is more accurate for EPG, you should try it.
What to Check Before Your Trial Ends
Don’t wait until hour 23 to evaluate a service. Test it for the first few hours for stress.
Use the service at peak times. This buffering that doesn’t show up at 2 PM will show up at 8 PM as a thousand users stream at once. Quality of provider’s infrastructure is revealed during load, not during quiet.
Test your channels that you will watch. It seems like a no-brainer but many trial users browse all the channel list and leave out the 5 channels they are interested in. Prioritize those.
See how long VODs are loading. If the provider has video on demand, go to a video and play it. The delay in video-on-demand response is an indicator of servers that are overloaded or weak CDN infrastructure.
Verify EPG accuracy. A wrong or missing TV guide is a daily annoyance that builds up over time of a subscription.
The Real Point of a Free Trial
A free trial IPTV period is actually a managed check out environment. Use it like one. The intent is not to eat content, but to make an educated and informed decision on whether or not they should invest in a subscription. Try the protocol your setup needs – STBemu, Stalker Portal, or IPTV Xtream. Serve in a realistic scenario. Then decide.
The optimum IPTV subscription is the one you have verified prior to paying for.
