Streaming has changed. The “pay for a package, watch channels you don’t, repeat” is a model that is no longer in vogue. In its place: IPTV. But if you are new to it, the best way to get an idea of the technology before you invest one dirham or dollar is to take advantage of a free trial IPTV service.
This article will cover everything in detail. No fluff. Everything you wanted to know about.
What is really IPTV?
IPTV is an acronym for Internet Protocol Television. The content is not sent via a television broadcast or satellite transmission, but rather sent via the internet, similar to streaming music or the web.
The practical difference? Flexibility. You don’t need to watch on a TV or on a local schedule. With Internet connectivity and the right device, live programming, on-demand programming, and recorded programs are available from anywhere.
The experience will depend on the service you get, your internet speed and the app or portal you access the content via.
The Three Main Access Methods: STBemu, Stalker Portal, and Xtream Codes
Currently, most of the IPTV service is being accessed through three main systems. The difference is important to be aware of before signing up for a free trial.
STBemu is an application for the Android OS that acts as a Mag STB — a hardware box that was used in Eastern European IPTV deployments. A provider will provide you with STBemu credentials, including a portal URL, real or emulated MAC address, and possibly a subscription period. The app logs in to the server, fetches the list of channels, and provides a user interface that is similar to the physical set-top box navigation. STBemu is especially favored by customers who desire a fresh and clear TV-like user interface on their Android gadget, as opposed to investing in particular hardware.
STBemu-style access is based on the “backend framework” of Stalker Portal. It is a server based system that handles user authentication, channel delivery and subscription validation. If a free trial IPTV service claims to offer Stalker Portal, they’re referring to the technology that their infrastructure utilizes. It is accessed by users via the STBemu app (or a physical Mag device) and is controlled by the Stalker Portal.
Xtream Codes is a completely different access. Xtream Codes doesn’t emulate hardware but uses a logon system based on username and password, and a server URL. This format can be accessed by many applications, such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and many others. Xtream Codes providers help users with greater choice over which playback application they use. They are more likely today to be the general standard and most IPTV free trial sites will list the Xtream Codes login information as the first or second entry on the list of methods to access the service.
Why Providers Offer a Free Trial IPTV Period
The economics are simple. A competitive market is ITPV. This is a free trial IPTV service, which allows the potential viewer to test the stability of the channels, the quality of the stream and the compatibility of the application without having to commit.
On the provider’s end, it’s also a confidence indicator. A service that promises no trial is requesting trust that it hasn’t earned. The services that have 24- to 48-hour (and sometimes 72-hour) free trials are claiming one thing: if you let the product do the talking, you won’t be disappointed.
Things to consider in that time period:
- Video stalls — does the video buffer often or not?
- Resolution — 10,000 channels aren’t worth anything if 8,000 of them are broken connections.
- Accurate EPG (Electronic Program Guide) — Is the guide correct as to what is playing?
- This is where you can get a look at what on-demand content is available and test it out specifically if its important to you.
- App compatibility – check if the service is compatible with your preferred Xtream Codes player or STBemu setup
What is included in a Free Trial?
This is dependent on the provider but most IPTV free trials provide you with one of the following:
Limited version of full package, meaning less channels, no VOD or restricted time window. Or a full account with a valid expiry (usually 24 or 48 hours) with your actual Xtream Codes or Stalker Portal account.
The second type is more useful. The 48-hour full-access trial will give you a feel for what the paid subscription offers. A “watered-down” demo gives you little information.
Before you sign up for a trial, make sure you ask if they provide VOD content, multi-connection support and catch up TV. This can have a major impact on the usability of the service every day.
Device Compatibility and Setup
ITVP services with STBemu and Xtream Codes are compatible with many devices. One or both formats are supported by Android TV boxes, Android based phones, Fire TV Stick, Nvidia Shield and some Smart TVs with dedicated apps.
The set-up is different for both:
For STBemu: Install app, go to settings, add a portal (URL provided by your provider) and enter the MAC address. The portal opens and you’re in.
To login to Xtream Codes, open your TV player, select Xtream Codes login and enter the server URL, username and password. The app fetches the playlist from server.
Both processes are less than 5 minutes when the right credentials are there.
What to Watch For
Not all IPTV free trials are worth going to. There are some indications to look out for:
Providers that ask for credit card details at the beginning of a trial are also a red flag. Providers that are not sure about the access method that they support (STBemu/Stalker Portal or Xtream Codes) are not likely to have stable infrastructure. If they offer a very high channel count but have no details regarding the uptime and redundancy of their server, then they are likely to be misleading you.
The best IPTV services allow the trial to be left stand alone. No pressure. No countdown calls. Just access.
The Bottom Line
The best way to determine if a service is worth paying for is to do so for a free trial IPTV period. That the provider is on the STBemu and/or Stalker Portal infrastructure, or that the provider issues Xtream Codes credentials, does not affect the bottom line: this is about stream quality and stability, and compatibility.
Continue the test for those three points throughout your trial period. The service is likely worth the subscription if they’re holding up. If they do, there’s no loss of money in learning.
