Streaming has changed. Cable is shrinking. And an increasing number of homes are turning to IPTV — Internet Protocol Television — as their main source of live channels, sports and on-demand content. However, given the hundreds of providers now competing in the market, the free trial IPTV service is the usual way for new members to enter the service.
The real facts to consider before signing up to anything.
What a Free Trial IPTV Service Includes
The IPTV free trial subscription usually enables you to watch all of the channels offered by a provider for a short period of time – typically 24 to 48 hours or even up to 7 days. In that period, you can enjoy live TV streams, VOD libraries, and in many instances, an Electronic Program Guide (EPG), which enables you to see what is currently on the air and when.
The trial period is given for a pragmatic reason, because the quality of the IPTV stream will vary considerably from provider to provider. Paper buffer rates, uptime and channel count may be the same, but real performance may vary significantly in peak hours. A free trial allows you to experience the actual performance of the internet connection before you pay for it.
Most reputable providers won’t ask for a credit card to use for a trial. It is important to note if a platform requires payment information to “activate” a “free” period, as there is no such thing as a free period.
STBemu and the Stalker Portal: How They Work Together
The most typical way to set up IPTV on Android is by using a program called STBemu (Set-Top Box Emulator). It is an application which acts as a hardware set-top box and can turn your smartphone, tablet, or Android TV device into a dedicated IPTV receiver.
STBemu is connected with the provider by a middleware system known as a Stalker Portal, which was originally designed for use in physical STBs and is now being adopted by the rest of the IPTV industry. With a free IPTV subscription from a provider using a Stalker Portals, you will be provided with three pieces of information – a portal URL, a MAC address (your device’s real address or generated address), and maybe a device ID.
In case you are planning to use it in STBemu, you can open the app, go to the profile settings and enter the portal URL given by your IPTV service. The app then logs in as per Mac address and loads provider’s interface – channels, EPG, and all. No user name or password for the traditional sort. Your identity on the network is your MAC address.
This configuration is especially suited for those who would prefer to have a TV-like interface and not use a playlist. Stalker Portal systems typically are presented in a grid of categories; this is what users familiar with cable or satellite television are accustomed to seeing.
IPTV Xtream Codes: The Other Standard
In addition to the Stalker Portal system, the other major protocol in the IPTV ecosystem is IPTV Xtream (also known as the Xtream Codes API). In Stalker Portal, the server uses a MAC address, while Xtream Codes uses a standard login: a server URL, a username and a password.
If you’re given a free trial from an Xtream provider, you’ll receive a panel URL (usually a domain or IP address and port number), user name and a password. The Xtream format is the more flexible of the two standards since these credentials can be used with a variety of IPTV applications, such as Tivimate, IPTV Smarters, and GSE Smart IPTV.
In addition, the Xtream Codes API can also be used to generate M3U playlists, so that your subscription can be loaded as a static playlist file in compatible apps or even smart TV apps that can be loaded directly from an M3U URL. Many users will want Xtream-based providers for this compatibility: the same username and password are used for all devices and platforms without reconfiguration.
Usually, when you use IPTV Xtream during a free trial, the username and password are only available for a specific period of time on the server. After the trial period expires, the login process just fails to log in. If you’re not a dedicated subscriber, there is no danger of an automatic charge.
Choosing Between STBemu/Stalker Portal and Xtream Codes
The two systems are used by different users.
The STBemu with Stalker Portal connection is best suited for those who prefer to run a self-contained app from a single Android device, including Android TV boxes and Fire TV sticks sideloaded with the app. The interface is smooth, the way to navigate is intuitive, and the setup once completed is very low maintenance.
Xtream Codes via IPTV Xtream login is ideal for those who want flexibility, such as being able to load channels into a smart TV without having to install a third party application, multiple devices, different applications, etc. It also fits in better with EPG providers and out-of-house guide services.
Many IPTV service providers offer both protocols. If you’re on a trial, you should check if your provider has a Stalker Portal URL and Xtream Codes credentials as well, since both will be helpful to test and see which one works best for your setup.
Things to Consider When Taking Advantage of a Free Trial
It only takes 24 or 48 hours of free IPTV window to try out what’s important:
The most critical variable is stream stability during the “primetime hours” (usually between 7pm and 11pm). This is the time when the server is most heavily used, and buffering is more frequent on lower quality providers.
It is not as significant to have many channels as it is to have reliable channels. An objective comparison of a provider with 5000 constantly changing channels versus a provider with 1500 stable channels is poor provider.A provider with 5000 channels constantly changing, is objectively a poor provider versus a provider with 1500 stable channels.
The accuracy of EPG (whether or not the program guide matches what’s being broadcasted) is a good indicator of overall service quality. On average, providers who keep their EPG data are more engaged in watching overall uptime and stream maintenance.
A complimentary trial is a legitimate tool. Take it step by step and it will tell you all you need to know.
